A visitation for Elmo C. Kern, 72, of Washington will be held Thursday, March 20 from 1 – 8 PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington where the family will greet friends from 5 – 8 PM. Elmo C. Kern died Monday, March 17 at the Washington County Hospital following a lingering illness.
A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County and the Washington County Mini Bus.
Elmo Charles Kern was born September 3, 1941 in Washington, Iowa the son of Lester and Lovetta (Patterson) Kern. He graduated from Washington High School and began work as a mechanic at the Stewart Pontiac and Buick Garage. On August 4, 1962 he was united in marriage to Yvonne Kay Ayers at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. He then worked at International Harvester for 16 years and from 1984 until 1994 he and Yvonne operated the Hawkeye '76 Station. For the past 20 years he worked at the Washington County Mini Bus. Elmo enjoyed working on and racing drag cars and snowmobiling. He loved to buy the grandkids mini bikes, go karts and golf carts and watch them ride around in the yard.
Survivors include his wife Yvonne of Washington, two daughters; Angie Martin and special friend Lance of Mt. Pleasant, Mindy (Jake) Miller of Washington, two granddaughters; Jami Miller and Kailey Martin, one great granddaughter; Bristol Kucera, and one sister; Cheryl Kern of Lomax, Illinois.
Preceding Elmo in death were his parents and three brothers; Arlo, Mervin and Cliss Kern.
