Elizabeth Graber, 92 of Newton, Kansas, formally of Washington, died Friday, January 19, 2007 in Newton.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 AM Friday, January 26, 2007 at the Bethel Mennonite Church with Rev. Robert Hartzler and Rev. Phil Slabaugh officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Thursday at the Church with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 PM. Beatty Funeral Home of Washington is assisting with arrangements. Memorials in the name of Elizabeth Graber may be designated to Hospice of Newton, KS or the Gideon’s.
Elizabeth was born June 4, 1914 in Nobel, IA the daughter of Roy and Susan (Wittrig) Alston. At the age of 4 ½ she and three other siblings lost both parent within three days from the flue epidemic of 1918. She lived with her grandparents until they passed away when she was fourteen. She went to South Dakota and lived with her Aunt Nettie and Uncle Adolph Preheim. There she met and married a neighbor boy, Elvin Miller on June 6, 1934. Two daughters were born Lorene and Lilah. In November of 1939 Elvin died suddenly.
While in Iowa for her brothers wedding, she met Alvin D. Graber. They were united in marriage December 21, 1941. They had a son Rodney and daughter Lavonne. On December 21, 2006 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include her husband Alvin of Newton, KS; children Lorene Kaufman of Newton, KS, Lilah Bohn of Wichita, KS, Rodney Graber of Topeka, KS and Lavonne Dyck of Saskatchewan, Canada; ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, brothers, William and John; sisters, Wilma Roth; son-in-law Lawrence Kaufman and grandson Randy Kaufman.
