The Lord called Eleanor Cecilia Marie, 88 of Washington, and took her to her eternal home Friday evening, January 30, 2004 at the Washington County Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Rev. Fr. Ed O’ Melia officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 in the evening. A rosary will be at 4:00 P.M. with the Catholic Daughters and a prayer service will be 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Memorials in the name of Eleanor Marie may be designated to Hospice of Washington County.
Eleanor (Babe) is the youngest daughter of Jacob and Paulena (Heuberger) Schmitt, being born July 14, 1915 at Harper, Iowa. She attended St. Elizabeth’s school, graduating from High School in 1931. She then was privileged to attend Ottumwa Heights Junior College graduating in 1933. She continued her education at Parson College in Fairfield receiving her B.A. in Elementary Education in 1967.
On September 28, 1943 she was united in marriage to William J. Marie Jr. at St. Elizabeth Church in Harper.
Eleanor was a member of St. James Catholic Church for over fifty years and was involved with St. James Choir for twenty years, Altar and Rosary Society, Diocessian Council of Catholic Women, an honorary member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a lifelong member of the Iowa Teachers Association.
She taught for twenty-seven years in Keokuk and Washington County and also at Holy Trinity at Richmond before becoming Senior Citizen Director at the YMCA for eight years.
Eleanor dearly loved both classical and popular music, playing cards, traveling, spending time at the YMCA, helping others and having coffee with the Aquasize group.
Survivors include children Mike Marie of Washington, Mary Ann Longbine and husband Jim of Washington and John Marie of Carson, CA; one sister Marie Marie of Washington and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.
