Edythe Bernadine Grosscup 101 of Washington, IA died Sunday, January 1, 2012 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA following a short illness.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, IA with Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 29. In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made to American Legion Post #29 or the American Cancer Society.
She was born February 16, 1910 the daughter of Charles Fredrick and Helen (Conger) Grosscup on their farm near Brighton, Iowa. Bernadine graduated from Brighton High School in 1928. She served her country as a member of the woman’s Coast Guard from 1943-1945. At that time she was in San Francisco then moved to LA to be close to an aunt after completing her tour of military duty. She was employed in CA until 1980. The fall of 1986 Bernadine returned to Brighton, Iowa where she stayed until moving to Washington, IA 1988. She resided at the Presbyterian Home until her death.
Bernadine was a 63 year cancer survivor. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church while living in CA and since returning to Iowa.
Surving are nephews Dean (Martha) Grosscup, Overland Park, KS, Charles ( Phyllis ) Grosscup Sun City, AZ, Bill Grosscup, Tyler, TX: nieces Helen ( George) Bentrott, Davenport, IA, Pauline (LeRoy) Brown, LeClaire, IA, and Ann Grosscup Coralville, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Mervin, Dariel and Cletus.
