J. Duwaine Hirschy, 80 of Wayland, died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at his home following a short illness.
Funeral Services have been set for 1:00 PM Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Wayland Mennonite Church with Pastor Kelly Slagel, Pam Unruh and Rev. Loren Hirschy officiating. Burial will be in the North Hill Cemetery. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Visitation will begin at 1:00 Tuesday at the church with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 PM. A general memorial in the name of J. Duwaine Hirschy has been established.
J. Duwaine Hirschy was born in October 18, 1928 the son of Joseph Christner Hirschy and Lydia Magdalena (Wagler) Hirschy. He was born at the family home in Jefferson Twp. Henry County, Iowa. He accepted the Lord as his Savior on October 29, 1939 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. On March 19, 1950 he married Bonnie Elaine (Elder) Hirschy at Wayland Mennonite Church.
J. Duwaine was a farmer west of Trenton for 14 years and a self employed painting contractor and antique store owner in Wayland since 1964. He was widely known for his antique furniture restoration and refinishing. He loved music, singing in the Harmony Four Quartet, and later in the Rhythm Rockers. He was a member of the S.E. Iowa Poets Association and a Pinochle club member of Parkview. He wrote over 1000 poems and enjoyed sharing a joke or two, publishing four poem books, and writing 12 joke and poem books, which have been shared at his many speaking engagements and by family and friends. He was an active member of the Wayland Mennonite Church until the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie, three children, ten grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, son Dr. Larry D Hirschy (Connie) of Chariton, Iowa: Luke (Jenny) Jonah Hirschy of Chicago, Isaac (Christy) Hirschy of Chariton, Hannah (Chris) Querry, Cahde, Callahn of Chariton; daughter Faye L Schultz (Darrell) of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa: Jessica (Jesse) Harris of Waukee, Heidi (Jordan) Oschwald of Salem, OR, Leah Schultz of Mt. Pleasant; daughter Kaye L Johnson (Dwayne) of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa: Anthony Johnson of North Liberty, and Owen of Hannibal, MO; son Rev. Loren Hirschy (Joy) of Dubuque: Sean (Kirsten) Hirschy of Engelsberg, Germany, Gabriella, Smith, Marissa, Adam (Heidi) Hirschy of Dubuque, Taya, Eden, Nia, Judah, Abbi (Travis) Clark of Greenville, SC and Lauren. He is also survived by family members Sister Lula Swanson and husband Willard (Bill), Sister Joyce Conrad, Sister Frieda Bachman, Brother in law Dareld Stauffer, and Sister in law Esther Hirschy and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Joannita Stauffer, Edith Blosser and Ila Lengacher and one brother, Elwyn Hirsc
