Doris Jean Meyer was born January 20, 1927 in Wayland, IA to Emery I. and Edna Ruth (Wenger) Eigsti. She was united in marriage to Dean Meyer on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1945. Doris spent the first year of married life in New Jersey working as a housekeeper for a wealthy family while Dean served with Civilian Public Service in a mental hospital. Doris was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. Those homemaking years were spent: working part-time at Ron's gifts, Book and TV Center where she probably spent more on books to read and give away than she made in wages, teaching Sunday School at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church where she worshipped and served her entire life, and praying for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless other people. She was also instrumental in starting Crowded Closet in Iowa City. Doris was passionate about mission work, serving the lonely and less fortunate. Doris didn't serve on boards or mix with influential people, she was more at home cleaning someone's house, preparing a meal or hosting those that needed her hospitality. While she missed her grandchildren, she enjoyed life and continued to serve during retirement winters in Florida. As her health declined those who knew her and loved her recalled the loving and humble servant that she was.
Survivors include two sons: R.D (Brenda) Meyer of Laguna Niguel, CA, Robert (Karen) Meyer of Mt. Pleasant, IA, one daughter, Kathy (Dave) Schooley of Wayland, IA, six grandchildren: Rich Meyer (fiancee' Jen), and Rustin (Jenny) Meyer of San Diego, CA, Brian (Andrea) Meyer of Coralville, IA, Angela (Erik) Amunson of Swisher, IA, Sarah (Aldrich) Cabildo of Urbandale, IA, Ben (Tara) Schooley of Chariton, IA, ten great-grandchildren: Aubrey and Olivia Meyer, Alexa and Ryker Amunson, Dominic, Averia, Quincy and Emerson "Sonny" Cabildo and Kane and Kinsley Schooley.
