A celebration of life for Donald R. Zwicki, 82 of Washington will be held Monday, October 3, 2011 at 10:00AM at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Pastor Bob Wollenberg officiating. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 2 from noon until 7PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 5-7PM. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association, the Cancer Society and the Diabetes Foundation of America.
Don Zwicki died Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.
Donald Raymond Zwicki was born May 28, 1929 in Kinross, Iowa the son of Otto and Florence (Jones) Zwicki. He graduated from Ainsworth High School and obtained an Associates of the Arts Degree from Iowa Wesleyen College. On August 17, 1948 he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Meeks in Dow City, Iowa. Don taught in rural schools for three years and later was a substitute teacher in the Washington School District. He farmed for 25 years and was the Director of Transportation, Grounds and Buildings for the Washington School District for 21 years. Don also worked as a dispatcher for the Iowa State Patrol for three summers.
Don was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and attended there for many years but most recently had been attending the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. He was a member of the Washington Amateur Radio Club, the Wayland Antique Tractor Club and the Mid-West Old Threasher's since 1957.
He enjoyed operating his HAM Radio, restoring antique tractors and walking his cat Nicki. Don was known as a fix it guy, and spent countless hours helping friends and family members with various projects.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Washington, one son, Charles "Butch" and wife Deb Zwicki of Washington, a son in law, Jim Browning of Marietta, Georgia, one brother, Merlin and wife Bev Zwicki of Washington, four grandchildren, Austin Zwicki, Michelle Cook, Josh Noyes and Paul Noyes, and four great grandchildren, Larry "Trae" Cook, Andrew Cook, Ericka Clark and Karina Clark.
Preceding Don in death were his parents, one daughter, Linda Browning, one granddaughter, Landan Zwicki and one grandson, Justin Noyes.
