Donald R. Speas, 78, of Kalona died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital. His body has been cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date. A general memorial fund has been established.
Donald Ray Speas was born March 14, 1936 in Kalona, Iowa, the son of Lester "Bud" and Mabel (Hartsock) Speas. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1954 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1958. He served his country in the Army until 1960 when he transferred to the United States Army Reserve where he served until 1964. On April 7, 1963 he was united in marriage to Glennis Slaubaugh at the Kalona United Methodist Church. Don worked for the City of Kalona from 1969 to 1998. He was a member of the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 to 1993. Don enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Glennis of Kalona, two sons: Jim Speas of Kalona and Stacy (Mary) Speas of Kalona, one granddaughter, Brandi Speas of Houston, TX and one sister, Carolyn Petersen of Stanwood, IA.
Preceding Don in death were his parents and one brother in law, Tony Petersen.
