Donald E. Pencil, 78, of Washington, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the McCreedy Home in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, November 7, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Ilene Schnicker officiating. Burial will follow in the Elm Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 6 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington from noon until 8PM where the family will greet friends from 5-8PM.
Don Pencil was born January 22, 1930 in Brighton, Iowa the son of Everett and Edith (Coffin) Pencil. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1949 and joined his friend Dale Littrel in farming in Princeton, Iowa. After a year the two joined the United States Marine Corps. Don returned to Washington and managed the lumberyard at Lockridge, then went on to work at Washington Manufacturing for many years.
On October 10, 1955 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Neff at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa.
Don was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church, a past member of the Washington Optimist Club, the Jaycees and the Washington Manufacturing Bowling League. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycle riding, fishing, camping, and attending the early morning Hy-Vee coffee club and the Frontier afternoon coffee club.
A memorial fund for Washington County Mini Bus and Lending Hands has been established.
Survivors include his wife Charlotte of Washington, one brother, Charles Pencil of Washington, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Don in death were his parents.
