A celebration of life for David J. Dayton, 77, of Kalona will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Shiloh Church in Kalona with Pastors Chuck Rogness and Ron Shelton officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, June 10 from 4 – 7 pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund to be directed to the family has been established. Dave Dayton died June 7, 2016 at his home in Richmond.
David James Dayton was born February 17, 1939 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Jessie and Alta (Ledman) Dayton. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1957 and served his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 – 1965. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. On April 15, 1971 he was united in marriage to Mary Nisly at the Christian Tabernacle in Washington, Iowa. Dave worked at the Veteran's Administration Hospital for 25 years. He was a member of the Shiloh Church and was an avid supporter of Mid-Prairie and Hawkeye athletics. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball in his younger years and loved listening to rock and roll music, including his favorites; Elvis, Ted Nugent and Pat Benatar.
Survivors include four children: Michelle (Chris) Mingo of Bloomington, MN, Mark (Cindi) Dayton of Astoria, NY, John (Shawna) Dayton of Conroy, IA, Lonnie Dayton of North Liberty, IA, eight grandchildren: Katie and Kassie Iverson, Paige Dayton, Gable, Alexis and Gabriella Dayton, Joshua and Elijah Dayton, one brother; Don (Ethel) Dayton of Washington, IA and a sister-in-law, Gladys Dayton of Kalona.
Preceding Dave in death were his parents, his wife Mary in 2013 and siblings Pat, Mike, John and Bernice.
