Darrell Lee Borchardt “Turk”, 61 of Wayland formally of Washington died Monday, February 16, 2004 at his home in Wayland.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland with Rev. Robert Hartzler officiating. Burial will be at the North Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with family present from 6-8:00 P.M. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements. Memorials in the name of Darrell Lee Borchardt may be designated to Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Great River Hospice or A-Plastic Anemia MD Foundation.
Darrel was born May 19, 1942 in Welcome, MN the son of Theodore and Malinda (Fritz) Borchardt. He graduated from Welcome High School and attended Mankato State College. On June 5, 1959 he was united in marriage to Jayne Blanchar in Welcome, MN.
He farmed with his father and raised turkeys in the Welcome area before moving to Washington in 1966 where he worked for Northrup King Seed Co. as District Sales Manager. Later he worked for 15 years with Jacques Seed Co. as Regional Sales Manager and following that was employed with Heartland Payment Systems as District Manager of Iowa. He loved the sales field and was an entrepreneur that started three businesses on his own, and was in the middle of trademark application for “You Don’t Have to Be Blind” and “The Blind Visionary”.
During his years in Washington he was involved in the Community Theater. This was one of the most important and fun times for him. Whether he had a leading role or supportive role he got an absolute high from being on stage.
Darrell was a 32 degree Mason and a Shriner. He attended Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where he taught Adult Sunday School, even though he was not a member, he always said he had found a home and loved the Mennonite Church. He was a fun-loving guy that never knew a stranger.
Survivors include his wife Jayne of Wayland, children, Timothy Borchardt of Iowa City, Tammy Sybil and husband John of Wayland and Thomas Borchardt and wife Julie of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Landon and Logan Hesser of Wayland, Kaley and Erin Borchardt of Ankeny; one great-grandson Brody Hesser of Mt. Pleasant; sister Ione Nelson of Welcome, MN and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lavere, Theodore and Jerald.
