Chester Young

January 29, 1926 — May 16, 2003

Chester James Young, 77 of Washington, died unexpectedly Friday, May 16, 2003 at his home in Washington.

Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with the Rev. Diane G. Bishop officiating. Burial will be at the Crawfordsville Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Monday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 P.M. in the evening. A memorial to the United Church of Crawfordsville has been established in the name of James Young.

James was born January 29, 1926 in Crawfordsville, Iowa the son of Farrel A. and Helen (Cherryholmes) Young. He was united in marriage to Frances Durst on February 24, 1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville.

He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army. James was a member of United Church of Crawfordsville and a life member of the NRA. He was a farmer in the Crawfordsville area and a director/agent for Farmers Mutual Insurance Assn. from 1960 till 1989. James and his wife retired to Washington in 1990. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Frances of Washington, son, Roger Young of Washington, two daughters, Diane Singer and husband Greg of College Station, TX and Irene Young and husband John of Iowa City, IA, four grandchildren, Lori Norton, James Singer, Alex Young and Lindsey Young, great-granddaughter, Kayla Norton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard.



Organ music was preformed by Ruth Erwin. Special selections were In The Garden and How Great Thou Art. Pallbearers are Merle Pacha, Larry Hesseltine, George Fulton, Walter Krantz, Clint Converse and Doug Steele. Honorary bearer was Nolan Stogdill and Ed Schultz.
