Caroline Esther Dietrich Ballard, 93, Sigourney, formerly of Kinross, died May 27, 2011 at Manor House in Sigourney.  Direct burial took place May 28, 2011.  Visitation with the family is Sunday, June 5, 5-7pm, at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, Iowa.  Celebration of Life is Monday, June 6, 11am, at the English River Church of the Brethren.

Caroline was born Feb. 1, 1918 in Iowa County, the daughter of William Dietrich and Maria Sophia Fredarika (Mary) Schwertfeger.  She attended the Normal School teaching program at Marengo High School and taught in one room schoolhouses upon graduation.  She married Cecil Dean Ballard on March 17, 1940 and left teaching, but remained a teacher at heart, reaching children as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, a 4H leader, and making herself available as a baby sitter throughout her rural neighborhood.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Della Allen, Bonnie Bergman (Ed), Christine Ballard (Denny), six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Greta Newberry.  She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil in 1974, by her parents, her five siblings, and her son-in-law Thomas Allen.
