Calvin Eichelberger

Calvin John Eichelberger, 85 of Wayland, died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Parkview Home in Wayland.


Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland with Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Monday at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 PM. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to the Parkview Home or the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.


Cal was born January 1, 1927 near Wayland, the son of William and Katie Graber Eichelberger. He attended Eicher School, and graduated from Wayland High School in 1945. He trained in dairy testing at Iowa State College, and attended Bible Term at Goshen College. Cal married Betty L. Johnston of Crawfordsville on March 20, 1949.

He was a long and active member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and chaired the building committee for the new church in 1985-86. He farmed near Wayland for a number of years, managed the Wayland Sale Barn, and later the Waco Livestock Market near Olds. Upon retirement he and Betty wintered in Sarasota, Florida. She preceded him in death in March 11, 2001. He married Anna Driver in March 1, 2003.

Survivors include his wife Anna of Sarsota, FL; children, Dave Eichelberger and wife Nancy of Wayland, Don Eichelberger of Wayland, Bruce Eichelberger and wife Jo of Wayland, Joe Eichelberger of Iowa City, Jan Hochstetler and husband Dave of Kalona, IA; sisters Anita Swartzendruber and husband John of Wayland and Aldine Wyse of Goshen, IN; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.


Preceding Cal was his parents, his wife Betty, brothers Alie and Orrin, sisters Alice Martin and Donna Horst, nephews Scott Wyse and Gary Eichelberger.
