Bernard J. Nichting, 81 of Salem, IA died Monday, February 24, 2003 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant following declining health.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 28, 2003 at St. John Catholic Church in Houghton the Rev. Fr. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Cemetery. Visitation will began at Noon Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Houghton with family receiving friends from 6-8:30 P.M. in the evening. There will be a Rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. at the Church on Thursday also. Beatty Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant is assisting the family. Memorials may be designated to the Salem Fire and Rescue Squad or the St. John Catholic Church.
Bernard was born September 22, 1921 at home north of Houghton the son of John and Elizabeth (Harmeyer) Nichting. He graduated from St. John High School in Houghton and on May 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to Bernice Lampe in the basement of St. John School in Houghton.
He was an active member of the St. John Catholic Church in Houghton, Grand Knight 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. He was a life long resident and farmer in the Salem and Houghton area. He loved his family, friends, cattle, horses, playing cards, visiting the coffee shop, dancing telling jokes and enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Bernice of Salem; four sons, Gary Nichting and wife LouAnn of Mt. Pleasant, Clarence Nichting and wife Leisha of Mt. Pleasant, Jim Nichting and wife Sandra of Salem and Steve Nichting and wife Cindy of Salem; five daughters, Betty Perrenoud and husband Mike of Houghton, Diane Klesner and husband Jim of Mt. Pleasant, Nancy Meyer and husband Mike of West Point, Mary Sieck and husband Rich of Toddville, IA, and Margie Harvey and husband Jim of Neenah, WI; sister, Celine Schulte of West Point; twenty-three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Gerhard and Lester Nichting and grandson Eric Perrenoud.
