Funeral services for Barbara E. Unternahrer 90 of Wayland, IA will be held Monday, December 20th at 10:00AM at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland with Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will follow at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 19 from 1-6 PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland where friends can greet family from 3-5 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Gideon’s International, Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Parkview Home. Barbara E. Unternahrer, 90 of Wayland, died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Parkview Home in Wayland.
Barbara was born November 11, 1920 in Wayland, IA, the daughter of John R. and Katie S. (Christner) Wenger. She attended Sommers Rural School and on June 21, 1942 was united in marriage to Noah Unternahrer. Barbara was a homemaker and also did housekeeping for several families in Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church where she participated in WMSC and had taught Sunday school and Bible school. Barbara also volunteered at the Crowded Closet. She enjoyed tending her large garden and family and friends enjoyed her hospitality. Barbara was committed to the Lord and enjoyed reading her Bible and singing hymns.
Survivors include five children and spouses, Kathryn (Charlie) Smith of Nappanee, IN, Ronald (Ingrid) Unternahrer of Stroudsburg, PA, David (Janis) Unternahrer of Wayland, Rosetta (David) Koerner of Kalona, Esther (Chuck) Amstutz of Orrville, OH, one daughter in law, Hortensia Unternahrer of Wayland, 11 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one brother, Harold Wenger of Wayland.
Preceding Barbara in death were her parents, husband Noah in August 2008, her son, Norman in March 2007, two great grandchildren, John Luke Walker and Hazel Irene Smith and three brothers, J.C., Raymond and Ira Wenger.
