Arnold Keith Smothers, 81 of Washington, died Friday, July 31, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness.
An informal Celebration of his life will be 4:30 PM Monday, August 3, 2009 at the Beatty Funeral Home with Grant Nebel officiating. His body has been cremated. Open visitation will be Sunday from 1-5:00 PM at the Beatty Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 2:30-4:30 PM prior to the service on Monday. Memorials in the name of Arnold Keith Smothers may be designated toward Hospice of Washington Co. or Pure Water For All Foundation.
Arnold was born February 13, 1928 in Washington, Iowa the son of Emmett J. and Laura (Cox) Smothers. He graduated from North English High School and was united in marriage to Lea Day Proctor on June 5, 1965 in Keota.
He served in the U.S. Army and was employed with Iowa Southern Utilities as a lineman. He was a member of the Keota and Brooklyn American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, poker, crossword puzzles and was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include his wife Lea of Washington, six children, Patricia Bolton and husband Bill of Peoria, IL, Collin Proctor and wife Joann of Wilton, IA David Smothers of Coralville, IA Dr. Brian Proctor and wife Tamara Ender of La Crosse, WI Brenda Wilhelm and husband Gary of Cranston, IA and Todd Smothers and wife Marsha of West Des Moines; two brothers Clifford Smothers and wife Marvel of Millersburg, IA and Richard Smothers of Keota; two sisters Louise Lockridge and husband James of North English, IA and JoAnn Davidson of Dubuque, IA; eleven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Gerald and Dale and his first wife Mary Ruth.
