Funeral services for Alvin R. Gingerich, 88 of Kalona will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10:00AM at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church with Pastor Elmer Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the East Union Mennonite Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be held at the Peterseim Funeral Home on Thursday, April 1 from 6-8PM and Friday, April 2 from 2-4 and 6-8PM. Alvin Gingerich died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice and Pleasantview Home. Alvin was born April 26, 1921 in rural Johnson County the son of Daniel and Veronica Fannie (Jantzi) Gingerich. He was united in marriage to Lydia Ropp on April 9, 1944 at the Fairview Mennonite Church. Alvin served in the Civilian Public Service in South Dakota and Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 1978 as a Licensed Practical Nurse, and worked at the University of Iowa Hospital for over 30 years. Alvin was a faithful member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church where he served as an elder, was involved in Prison Ministry, and volunteered at the Crowded Closet and Pleasantview Home. Survivors include his wife Lydia of Kalona, seven children and spouses, Daniel (Myra) Gingerich of Sarasota, Fl, James (Lois) Gingerich of Kalona, Donald (Cynthia) Gingerich of Kalona, Ella Mae Gingerich of Des Moines, IA, Celeste (Harry) Miller of San Antonio, TX, Dwight (Maureen) Gingerich of Kalona, Jewel (Fred) Gingerich Longenecker of South Bend, IN, daughter-in-law, Cathy Gingerich of Coralville, 18 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, one brother, Verton Gingerich of Middlebury, IN, three sisters, Nina Miller of Kalona, Alice Hochstedler of Kalona, Ella June (Eldon) Miller of Rowdy, KT, three sisters in law, Mary Gingerich of Nashwauk, MN, Clara Gingerich of Iowa City and Ada Gingerich of Colorado Springs, CO. Preceding Alvin in death were his parents, one son, Kenneth Gingerich, two grandchildren, Angela and Andrew Gingerich and three brothers, Leslie, George and Ivo Gingerich.
