Alta Rhodes Marner was born in Johnson County, rural Kalona, Iowa, on February 10, 1912. She was the daughter of Chris J. and Eliza Ann Gingerich Rhodes.
Alta attended Fairview Grade School and graduated from Sharon High School in 1930. Alta was baptized and became a member of East Union Mennonite Church.
Alta was married to Walter E. Marner at the home of Rev. D. J. Fisher in rural Iowa City on February 22, 1933. Walter and Alta were blessed with a daughter Anita Marie, and two sons, K. Francis and Keith A. They were married 56 years.
In March of 1933 the couple moved on the Elmer Morgan farm and farmed there for 41 years. Alta enjoyed the farm. She loved life and also had a sincere love for her family and many friends.
In her younger years she taught Sunday school and Bible school and was active in W.M,S.C and served as president and vice-president. She enjoyed the youth of the Church, the talent they shared in Church and their school activities.
In 1974 the farm was sold and the couple moved to Kalona where she was employed and also volunteered at Pleasantview Home.
Surviving are her son K. Francis and wife Deanna of Wheaton, IL, her son-in-law Elton Pfile of Freeport, IL and a former daughter-in-law, Joycelyn Marner Woods of Austin, TX, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one brother, Eldon and wife Dorothy Rhodes of Kalona.
Alta was preceded in death by her husband Walter (March 6, 1989) her parents, two children, Keith (1968) and Anita Pfile (2008), four brothers, Omer J., Frank, John and Emery, two sisters,
Ella Hostetler and Katie Frey and a still born son.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the East Union Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 21, 2014 from 3-7pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona.
A memorial fund has been established for East Union Mennonite Church or Parkview Manor.
